I'm so sorry I didn't get to participate in Joburg. There is so much emotional attachment to this question, and I wanted diverse, intelligent opinions and the strength of collaborative conversation to see if we can find a different layer of clarity to base our decisions on. Did that happen?
Is there one thing that really stood out for you as an unusual / fresh or innovatve approach to using what we have here to serious strategic advantage, not just survival?
A little while ago, I attended the "Age of Turbulence" seminar, where Russel Loubser (CEO of the JSE) was one of the speakers.
I have always had a rather strong view against people leaving SA just for the sake of getting away, but Russel said something which struck me quite hard - how can we expect people to stay when we aren't creating an environment conducive to attract people to stay or come here? Fairly simple, yet profound.
It's easy to take the high-road and say that staying is the right thing to do, but we have to realise that to stop the brain drain, government and business have to work together to creative exactly that type of environment, something not happening at the moment.
